I have to ask you “Have you been getting your rest?”. The reason I asked is because if not, you will be tired and this can cause trouble! Are you nipples hurting and you’re not sure way? They might be trying to tell you something is wrong.
Take a long look at the next few points that will happen if you get your rest:
1- In nursing mothers, many kinds of breast problems are eased.
2- Prolonged or heavy vaginal bleeding, peri-menopause or post-partum, lessened.
3- Depression and general crabbiness, reduced.
Just these three points should be enough encouragement for bed rest. If not, here is another one: Going to bed with only you in panties and the baby in a diaper for 24 hours, this will help with the building up of milk production. Make sure you have PLENTY of fluids to drink, something to read for yourself and all the items baby will need for changing time, all placed on a bedside table.
A family member or friend can bring you any food or other items you might need - don’t be afraid to ASK!! This is for your health and the baby’s health. After the 24 hours is up, you will see a huge change in the amount of milk your body has created. Make sure you do not get up and move around a lot. Go to the bathroom and lay back down, skin to skin with your baby.
You have to stay at home, it’s not ‘let’s go to the Grandparents house and I’ll lay down there’. Guests can come to you or wait until you are up again. A few weeks of postpartum rest is not much time compared to some cultures where 40 days rest for a new mother is standard. Your husband, boyfriend or life partner can help you out. Ask a friend to start a Meal Train for you! This is a great tool to allow others to bring your family a hot meal in those first couple weeks home with baby.
The best ways to start off Motherhood is skin to skin with your baby (that’s why most nurses have you remove the clothes), high protein meals, and rest. Make sure you rest with the baby. Nine months was a long time to wait to see that little angel face, now take advantage of the time you can spend one on one skin to skin with him or her.
Once you are up again, tell the father to hold the baby with both being shirtless, as this helps the baby create a better bond with the father, as well as help regulating their internal thermostat. The father to baby bonding is an awesome experience to feel! “I am not sure how to describe the feeling I felt the first time I held my newborn”, many fathers say. Don’t worry Mom; your bond will never go away. The baby learned the sound of your voice and heart long before they learned anyone else.
